Leader in Training – Camp Backcountry

The Leader in Training (LIT) Program is a mentorship program for high school aged campers that focuses on leadership development and prepares them for future jobs, whether as a counselor at Camp Backcountry or elsewhere. This program gives students training, mentorship, and real-life experiences to sharpen their organization, social, and responsibility skills, all while earning volunteer service hours.

Camp Backcountry prides itself in being an inclusive program that celebrates diversity and differences. Regardless of background or current school, teens from the region come together to spend their summer working and playing alongside each other in the wild.

LITs will be paired with a counselor-mentor upon arrival Monday morning, who they will learn from throughout the week. LITs will spend the week going on adventures with and assisting with one camp group, consisting of campers ages 7-8 or 9-10. LITs will participate in special activities, leadership training, and exclusive programming designed specifically for the teens.

LITs must commit to participating in a minimum of 2 weeks with the program. The teens may choose to work with our nature camps, horse camps, or art camps based upon their interests. The program is competitive and requires a Letter of Interest be submitted to the Camp Director. Students, not parents, are responsible for communicating with Camp Backcountry staff regarding the Leader in Training opportunity.

Apply to be a Leader In Training

  • How to Apply: In order to be considered for the LIT program, interested students must submit a letter of interest to the Camp Director. Students must submit a letter each year, even if they have participated in the program before. Students, not parents, are responsible for communicating with Camp Backcountry staff and the Camp Director regarding the Leader in Training opportunity.
  • Dates: Letters of Interest will be accepted beginning December 1, 2020 through April 30, 2021. Slots will be filled on a rolling basis and may be filled prior to April 30.
  • What to Include in your Letter of Interest: A letter of interest is similar to a cover letter you would write to apply for a job. The letter of interest should include:
    • Why you want to spend part of your summer as an LIT with Camp Backcountry
    • What and how you will contribute to the LIT program
    • What traits you will bring to your peer team
    • How you think the LIT program will be beneficial to you
  • Next Steps: Once you submit your letter of interest you can expect to hear back from the Camp Director within a couple of weeks. If you are accepted into the program, you will be given more information on how to choose your sessions and register. LITs must be accepted into the program before they may register.
  • Off-Season LIT Program: LITs that are accepted into and participate in the summer LIT program may choose to register for any of our off-season sessions during the subsequent school year.
