Therapeutic Recreation

What is Therapeutic Recreation?

HRCA Therapeutic Recreation Programs are intended to enhance the quality of life of individuals with special needs. Programs are facilitated by Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists and/or qualified staff. We provide a quality and compassionate community-based environment for participants of all ages and abilities. Our goal is to challenge participants and support general independence, choice, self-determination, and self-confidence. We want each participant to enjoy recreation. We work towards social independence in a fun and safe environment, while encouraging a general sense of health, wellness, and improved quality of life.

Also, HRCA staff members in all program areas work together to support the leisure interests of people of all ages and abilities. Check the other sections of the guide for mainstream program opportunities when participants are ready for more independence. Ask the registration staff about free valet parking.

Who can participate?

Those age 8 and up with a physician's approval. Those under 8 years can practice with approval of the Therapeutic Recreation staff. Special Olympics Almost 8 Just Can't Wait (ages 5-7) For kids who are almost 8 and just can't wait to be an athlete! Provides an introduction to Special Olympics sports and skills. HRCA's Special Olympic sports are bowling, basketball, swim team, and tennis.
