Avoid cabin fever with a family friendly hike at our Backcountry Base Camp. Depending on the weather and conditions, we’ll do a short nature hike, explore in the woods, build snowmen, and relax in the fresh air. After the hike, post up next to the fire to roast marshmallows and make s’mores..
Explore the Backcountry Wilderness Area with a naturalist. Meet your naturalist at Base Camp, then wander through ponderosa stands, look for wildlife in their natural habitat, and chat about the conservation of the area. Keep an eye on the weather—these hikes will be guided on snowshoes if the snow accumulation calls for it. Don’t forget your binoculars! Ages 12+ recommended.
Full Moon Hikes
Leave your flashlight behind and let the full moon guide this hike into the Backcountry Wilderness Area. Put your senses on full alert as you take in the sights and sounds of the night. A naturalist will share how humans and animals see in the darkness versus the daylight, and how your eyes may not be able to see what's really out there. Ages 7+ recommended.
Join us for a walk in the Backcountry Wilderness Area! Stretch your legs and your knowledge of the Backcountry during this on-road walk. This social walk will be paced by the present participants and will not go off-road (no single-track trail hiking)..
Have you seen our local pair of nesting golden eagles or peeked into a birdhouse to see baby bluebirds? Whether you are a master birder or merely a curious beginner, join us on one of our hikes or hayrides to see and learn about the magnificent birds found in Colorado. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera! Ages 8+ recommended.
Vehicle Drawn Hayrides
Join us on one of our various themed vehicle-drawn hayrides where you will get to take in the views of the Backcountry while learning about, and hopefully seeing, the magnificent wildlife found in Colorado. Depending on the time of year we might head out in search of birds, wild turkeys, or bugling elk. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!
Constellations and Cocoa
Take in the night sky with a cup of cocoa in-hand! Bring a picnic dinner to eat around the campfire, along with a blanket or camp chairs to sit on as astronomers use their know-how and telescopes to teach on the constellations of the winter sky.
